CS212M3: Communicating Professionally

This competency assessment assesses the following Outcomes:

CS212M3-3: Demonstrate oral communication skills for promoting a professional image.

GEL-1.03: Demonstrate college-level communication through the oral delivery of original materials in Standard English.

Video resume: Throughout your professional career, you may be called upon to submit a video resume for a new job. For this assignment, you are required to produce a video resume to persuade a potential employer that you are the best candidate for the position. Create a 120-180 second video resume which highlights your professional skills and experience. Remember to use professional language and tips for effective video resumes found in the module readings as you create your video. Keep in mind that the audience is a potential employer. It is important to establish your viewpoint and purpose for the video and sustain the rationale why you are the best candidate throughout the video.

Since this is a video-based assignment, no additional visuals are required. Consider these ideas for your video resume: excitement about your career; technical excellence in your field; leadership with proven impact; excellent public speaking, listening, written, and/or interpersonal skills; passion for success in everything you do; volunteer activities; awards and honors. This assignment is good preparation for answering the common interview question, “Tell me about yourself.”

Thinking about who you are as a professional, answer these questions in your video submission:

  1. What is your work history?

  2. What are the 1-2 most successful goals you have achieved as an individual?

  3. What was the most successful project you tackled as a member of a team?

  4. What career do you see yourself pursuing?

  5. Why did you choose your major?

  6. What are your favorite recreational activities?

  7. What volunteer activities do you find compelling? Why?

Recording your video:

Your video resume must be submitted to the assessment Dropbox as an MP4 file. It is recommended that you use Screencastify - Screen Video Recorder, which is a Google Chrome extension and records free up to 5 minutes.

Requirements for the video:

  1. Follow the conventions of spoken Standard English.

  2. Respond to all seven of the required questions.

  3. Use professional communication skills (clear enunciation, academic/professional tone, professional appearance and dress).

  4. Minimize background noise/interference. Ensure your background is not distracting and lighting is good.

  5. Sources are not required, but if used, be sure to cite the sources orally by naming the author. Visit the Writing Center for help with APA citation style.

  6. The purpose of the oral presentation is to persuade. Use professional oral delivery techniques, including word choice and oral expressiveness, display exceptional content, organization, and style, while leading the audience to a dynamic and supported conclusion and one that will get you hired.

Submitting Your Assessment: Save your speech as an MP4 file and load to the Assessment Dropbox. Make sure that you save a copy of your Assessment.
